Fellows Program

** NEW **
Nominate a Leader to Become an AHLA Fellow
AHLA is now accepting nominations for the Class of 2012. New Fellows will be announced during the Association's Annual Meeting in Chicago (June 24-27, 2012). Being a Fellow is one of the Association's highest honors as it recognizes health law community leaders who have contributed significantly to advancing AHLA's mission and who are generally regarded as one of the top healthcare lawyers in his/her community.

Nomination deadline is Friday, January 13, 2012 - submit your nominee's Curriculum Vitae to Cat Davis. Click here to review criteria for membership in the Fellows Program.

“I am proud that Health Lawyers has created a Fellows Program to recognize the significant contributions made by our lifelong leaders. They have enriched our Association and the practice of health law and we are pleased that our Fellows will play a significant role in helping to advance the Association’s mission.”
— Peter M. Leibold, AHLA Executive Vice President/CEO

What Does it Mean to be a Fellow?

In the Fall of 2004, AHLA established a program to recognize lifelong leaders of the Association. The Fellows Program created a forum for former volunteer leaders to remain active in and continue to contribute to the success of AHLA and to support the Association's public interest mission.

To date, only a small percentage of the more than 10,000 members of the Association have been chosen to become Fellows. This honor recognizes these individuals’ achievements, contributions, tenure with AHLA, and continuing service to the legal profession. The Fellows themselves act as ambassadors for the Association and serve as role models and mentors to current AHLA members.

Who are the Fellows?

Fellows include former AHLA presidents, members of the Board of Directors, practice group and program planning committee members and others who have been active within the Association. While representing a wide range of professional backgrounds, experience, and expertise, all of our Fellows share certain key characteristics that define them as leaders in the community. Emeritus Fellows are those Fellows who are no longer in active practice or who are deceased.

AHLA Fellows are…

  • Active participants in the American Health Lawyers Association
  • Leaders in their legal communities
  • Respected by their peers in the legal profession

In March of 2005, the Association honored forty individuals in the inaugural class of Fellows. A Fellows Coordinating Committee was established to oversee the Fellows program and the activities of the Fellows. Now, each year, up to ten new members are invited to become Fellows.

Law School Survey
Fellows are an integral part of AHLA’s support of health law students and law school alliances. Many Fellows participated in a survey earlier this year conducted by Boston University Professor Kevin Outterson. The survey provided valuable information about what employers and law firms are looking for in the next generation of health lawyers, qualities and skill sets that are not often taught in the classroom.

The results were published in the September 2011 issue of AHLA Connections as part of the Association’s special supplement for law students and law schools.
