David J. Greenburg Service Award

AHLA is pleased to announce Robert W. (Bob) Miller has been selected as the recipient of the 2011 David J. Greenburg Service Award. Presented annually to an individual who has shown great loyalty to the Association throughout his or her career and has made significant contributions to the growth and life of AHLA, Mr. Miller has earned this honor through his consistently outstanding participation in the activities of the Association. As an AHLA leader, presenter, author and editor, Mr. Miller has served AHLA, its members, and the health law profession with distinction.

Mr. Miller is a retired health law partner of King & Spalding and an adjunct professor at Emory University School of Law. He is currently a member of the Grady Memorial Hospital Corporation Board of Directors. He is a past president (1988-89) of the American Academy of Healthcare Attorneys, one of AHLA’s predecessor organizations.  He served on the AAHA Board from 1982-1990. Mr. Miller was named an AHLA Emeritus Fellow in 2008 and has been a frequent speaker at AHLA’s in-person programs, including several presentations of the “Year in Review” at the Annual Meeting.  The “Year in Review” requires extensive preparation and commitment and demonstrates an admirable breadth of expertise in health law.

Earlier this year, Mr. Miller ended a four year run as Editor in Chief of the Journal of Health & Life Sciences Law, overseeing the publication of fifteen issues of the Journal and the publication of 94 articles, reviewing countless others in the process. Mr. Miller spent hundreds of hours working voluntarily on behalf of the Journal’s subscribers to ensure that the magazine published only the highest quality articles. He also provided important leadership during two critical transitions: the conversion of the Journal to an electronic format in October 2009 and to an AHLA member benefit in early 2011.

AHLA’s Immediate Past President Rick Shackelford said of Mr. Miller: “I had the good fortune to work with Bob for almost 20 years both as a young associate and later as his law partner. This enabled me to observe first hand Bob’s relentless focus on excellence in all aspects of legal work, especially legal writing. That dedication to excellence is a major reason why [the] Journal is the superior product it is today.” Mr. Shackelford presented Mr. Miller with the Greenburg Award at AHLA’s Board dinner on June 25, 2011 at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum in Boston, MA.

The award is named after David J. Greenburg who was instrumental in the formation of both the American Academy of Healthcare Attorneys and the National Health Lawyers Association. AHLA’s success today is due in large part to Mr. Greenburg’s creativity, entrepreneurship, and vision.
